Members of the public vote for political parties, and those parties deploy Members to occupy seats in the Legislature. Elected Members participate in the work of committees and in proceedings of the House, where they represent communities, scrutinise reports and legislation, and help hold the Executive accountable.
In terms of political representation the Free State Legislature comprises thirty Members elected in terms of national legislation, with seats proportionally occupied by elected political party representatives.

MPLs support democratic governance through representation, committee oversight, law-making, public participation and accountability to the people of the Free State.
Members represent communities in the Legislature by taking part in House proceedings and committee work.
Committees scrutinise bills, reports and departmental information, and hold Members of the Executive accountable for service delivery.
Members consider legislation through readings, committee scrutiny, debate and decisions of the House.
Public participation gives communities opportunities to attend processes, make inputs, submit petitions and engage with the Legislature.
The Legislature provides checks and balances by requiring the Executive to account and by reporting committee findings to the House.
